The nerve your yoga teacher keeps mentioning - what it is, why it matters, and how to train it.
You have probably heard it mentioned in class. Maybe your teacher said something about the exhale activating the vagus nerve, or about humming at the end of savasana to stimulate vagal tone. Maybe you nodded along, made a note to look it up, and then forgot about it until the next time someone mentioned it.
The vagus nerve is not yoga jargon. It is not a piece of wellness vocabulary borrowed from science to make an ancient practice sound more credible. It is a real, mappable structure in your body, the longest nerve in your autonomic nervous system and it is, in a very literal sense, the biological reason yoga works the way it does.
Understanding it changes how you experience every class. It changes how you relate to your breath, your posture, your voice, your capacity for stillness. And if you are a teacher, or thinking about becoming one, it changes everything about how you hold a room.
This post will tell you what the vagus nerve is, what it does, why its health matters, and — most usefully - exactly how your yoga practice is already training it.
What Is the Vagus Nerve? Your Body’s Longest, Busiest Highway
The name comes from the Latin word for wandering - vagari and the nerve earned that name honestly. The vagus nerve originates in the brainstem and travels downward through the neck, past the throat and voice box, through the chest, around the heart, past the lungs, through the diaphragm, and all the way into the gut. It is the tenth cranial nerve and the primary nerve of the parasympathetic nervous system.
Most people know the autonomic nervous system in its two most discussed states: sympathetic (fight or flight - the accelerator) and parasympathetic (rest and digest - the brake). The vagus nerve is the primary mechanism of the brake. When it is active, heart rate slows, breathing deepens, digestion resumes, the immune system regulates, and the felt sense of threat recedes.
Here is the detail that changes everything: approximately 80 to 90 percent of the vagal nerve fiber run upward - from the body to the brain, not the other way around. The body is continuously sending information to the brain about its own state. This is why changing the breath, the posture, the voice, or the quality of physical sensation can shift a mental or emotional state directly and immediately. The body leads. The brain follows.

What that table makes clear is something remarkable: almost every structure yoga works with - the breath, the voice, the gut, the heart, the diaphragm is innervated by the vagus nerve. The practice has been stimulating this nerve for thousands of years. We simply now have the vocabulary to explain why.
Vagal Tone: Why Some People Handle Stress Better Than Others
Not all vagus nerves are equally active. The level of activity in the vagus nerve, how readily it engages the parasympathetic response and how effectively it helps the nervous system return to baseline after activation, is called vagal tone. And vagal tone varies, significantly, from person to person.
High vagal tone means the nervous system is flexible and responsive. You move into a stressful situation, you activate, and when the threat passes, you return to baseline relatively quickly. You recover well. Your sleep is deeper. Your digestion is easier. Your capacity for genuine connection with other people is greater.
Low vagal tone means the nervous system gets stuck. The stress response activates normally, but the return to baseline is slow or incomplete. The body stays in low-grade alert — chronically elevated cortisol, disrupted sleep, a gut that never quite settles, a mind that cannot fully land. Many of the symptoms that bring people to yoga — anxiety, burnout, exhaustion, a persistent sense of unease are, in physiological terms, signatures of low vagal tone.
The most reliable measure of vagal tone is heart rate variability, or HRV: the variation in time between each heartbeat. A high HRV indicates a nervous system that is flexible and responsive. A low HRV indicates a system that is rigid and stuck. Wearable technology now makes HRV tracking accessible outside the clinic, which is why athletes, executives and wellness practitioners have adopted it as a key measure of nervous system health.

How Yoga Trains the Vagus Nerve: Six Practices That Work
A well-taught yoga class is, among other things, a comprehensive vagal toning session. Here is what is actually happening, practice by practice.
Practice 1: Extended exhale breathing
The exhale is the primary trigger of the parasympathetic response. Every time you breathe out, your heart rate slows slightly- a phenomenon called respiratory sinus arrhythmia, governed directly by the vagus nerve. The longer the exhale relative to the inhale, the more pronounced the vagal activation.
This is why the instruction ‘make your exhale longer than your inhale’ appears in virtually every pranayama tradition, in every era. Try it now: inhale for four counts, exhale for eight. Notice what shifts in the body in the seconds after the exhale completes. That is the vagus nerve responding. That is vagal tone being trained, one breath at a time.

Practice 2: Ujjayi breath
Ujjayi - the slight constriction of the glottis that creates that characteristic ocean-breath sound does something specific to the vagus nerve that ordinary breathing does not. The larynx, through which the breath passes in ujjayi, is one of the densest concentrations of vagal nerve endings in the body. The gentle vibration created by the glottal constriction directly stimulates those fibers.
This is why ujjayi has a quality that goes beyond its role in building internal heat or anchoring the mind during a flowing sequence. It is settling in a way that is neurologically distinct from ordinary breathing. Students often describe the shift without being able to name it: ‘I don’t know why, but when I use that breath, something changes.’ Now you know why.
Practice 3: Chanting and humming
The vagus nerve runs through the larynx and pharynx and vocalization that produces sustained vibration in these structures stimulates it directly. Chanting OM, humming at the end of savasana, or sustained toning of any kind sends ripples through the vagal fibers in the throat in a way that speaking alone does not.
This is not metaphor or mysticism. Clinical studies have shown that humming produces measurable increases in HRV and measurable reductions in cortisol. It is one of the most accessible vagal stimulation practices available - requiring nothing but a voice and a willingness to make sound.
It also explains something practitioners often notice: a class that includes chanting or collective sound feels qualitatively different in the body from one that does not, even when the physical content is identical. The nervous system registers the difference.
Practice 4: Restorative and yin postures
The vagus nerve is stimulated not only through the breath and voice but through the body’s contact with support. Restorative postures in which the body is held completely by props, gravity, and the floor activate vagal receptors through the skin, the fascia, and the proprioceptive nervous system. The longer the hold and the more completely the body surrenders to support, the more profound the vagal response.

This is why a well-supported savasana produces a state categorically different from lying down on your bed in the middle of the day. The intentionality of the posture, the quality of the teacher’s presence, the support of the props, the collective stillness of the room -all of it compounds into something the nervous system receives as genuine permission to land.
Yoga nidra is the apex of this practice: a sustained, guided experience of conscious rest that holds the nervous system in the most restorative states available. If you have not yet experienced it, it is the most direct demonstration of vagal activation we offer.
Practice 5: Cold water and the diving reflex
This one lives just beyond the edges of the mat but it illustrates the reach of the vagus nerve and gives you a practical tool for acute stress moments. Splashing cold water on your face, or submerging your face briefly in cold water, triggers the mammalian diving reflex: an immediate, powerful vagal response that slows the heart rate, drops blood pressure, and activates the parasympathetic system within seconds.
It is not a yoga practice in the traditional sense. But understanding it extends your vagal toolkit beyond the studio. The next time you feel a panic response beginning — the heart rate climbing, the breathing shallow and fast -cold water to the face is one of the fastest physiological interventions available.
Practice 6: Safe, attuned community
This is the dimension of vagal toning that most articles miss and it is, according to Polyvagal Theory, among the most significant. Stephen Porges identified a branch of the vagus nerve he called the ventral vagal circuit: the most recently evolved part of the system, governing our capacity for social connection, co-regulation, and the felt sense of safety in the presence of others.
When we are in the presence of people who feel genuinely safe whose faces, voices and bodies communicate calm and welcome - our ventral vagal circuit activates. The nervous system of the group regulates the nervous system of the individual. This is co-regulation: one of the oldest mechanisms of mammalian survival, and one of the most profound benefits of practicing yoga in community rather than alone.

Is Your Vagal Tone Low? Signs Worth Knowing
These are not a diagnostic checklist. They are common experiences that often reflect a nervous system that has been in activation for too long without adequate recovery. If several of these feel familiar, that is not a personal failing. It is a physiological condition — and it responds to practice.
You may have low vagal tone if:
You recover from stress slowly. The activation lingers well after the stressor has passed an elevated heart rate for hours after a difficult conversation, a restless night following a pressured day.
