Why I Love Bali, Especially Ubud
Bali has a special place in my heart, and if there's one place on the island that truly captures its magic, it's Ubud. Nestled among lush jungles and terraced rice fields, Ubud is the soul of Bali—a town where culture, spirituality, and nature come together in perfect harmony.
A Rich Tapestry of Culture and Spirituality
What draws me most to Ubud is its deep sense of spirituality. Here, the Balinese way of life is woven seamlessly with their spiritual practices. Every morning, you can see locals placing offerings at their doorsteps—small, woven baskets filled with flowers, rice, and incense, expressing gratitude to the gods. This daily devotion brings a unique energy to the town, creating an atmosphere of peace and mindfulness. The endless sculptures invoke a spirit of reverence, awe and almost have a way of slowing down time. The air feels charged with a kind of sacredness, making it a perfect place to deepen one's spiritual practice.
The Warmth of the Balinese People
The people of Ubud are another reason I love this place so deeply. There is a warmth and kindness here that is palpable. Whether it’s a simple greeting on the street or a genuine smile from a vendor at the market, the locals exude a sense of joy and openness that makes you feel at home. They welcome you into their world with grace and generosity, offering a glimpse into their rich traditions and daily life.
Temples and Sacred Spaces
Ubud is home to some of Bali's most beautiful temples, each one a masterpiece of Balinese architecture and craftsmanship. Walking through the intricate stone carvings of Saraswati Temple or feeling the serenity of Tirta Empul’s holy spring water brings a sense of connection to something greater than myself. These sacred spaces are not just tourist sites; they are living, breathing places of worship where ancient traditions continue to thrive. The power of the universe is palpable and purifying, these temples have a way to your heart.
Art and Creativity Everywhere
Ubud is also a vibrant hub of art and creativity. The town is filled with galleries, workshops, and cultural performances that showcase the incredible talent of the Balinese people. From traditional dance to contemporary art, there’s always something to inspire and amaze. The art here is not just confined to galleries; it spills into the streets, cafes, and homes.
One of my favorite places in Ubud is the Campuhan Ridge Walk, a magical trail that winds through rice fields and is sprinkled with the works of local artists. On one visit to Bali, while I was teaching a yoga training and simultaneously training for a marathon, this trail became part of my daily routine. Every morning, I’d lace up my running shoes and take in the serenity of the rice paddies, the soft morning light, and the incredible creativity around me. There was one artist I passed each day whose work consistently drew me in. During my last week in Ubud, I knew I had to bring a piece of that magic home with me, so I purchased one of his paintings.
Running this trail, surrounded by both the beauty of nature and the pulse of artistic energy, reminded me how interconnected art and life are in Bali. It’s a place where craftsmanship isn’t just something you witness; it’s something you feel deeply, and I’m grateful I could carry a piece of that back with me.
The Majestic Rice Fields
And then, there are the rice fields—majestic, endless waves of green that stretch as far as the eye can see. There is something profoundly calming about watching the sun set over the terraced paddies, with their gentle curves reflecting the changing colors of the sky. The rice fields are a symbol of Bali’s deep connection to the earth and the harmonious way the Balinese people live with nature. They remind me to slow down, breathe, and appreciate the beauty that surrounds us.
A Place of Connection and Reflection
Ubud is more than just a destination; it's a place where you can connect with yourself, others, and the world around you. It offers a sanctuary for those seeking peace, inspiration, and a deeper understanding of life. In Ubud, I find a sense of balance and harmony that resonates with my own journey.
This town, with its rich culture, spirituality, art, warm-hearted people, and stunning landscapes, is a place that continues to captivate my heart. Ubud is not just a place I love; it's a place that reminds me of the beauty of life itself.
Every time I go I feel re-inspired, rejuvenated and reminded what truly matters in life.
